We're looking for anyone who:

  • Sticks with hard problems
  • Can learn an unfamiliar subject quickly
  • Demonstrates the ability to collaborate in project settings
  • Has little to no software experience

Already experienced? Try Developer. More drawn to UI/UX? Try Designer.

We're looking for anyone who:

  • Is excited by the prospect of building impactful software
  • Possesses a high capacity to learn
  • Can commit to a year-long project
  • Has some exposure to software

Newer to building software? Studio is the better fit. More drawn to UI/UX? Try Designer.

Designer

We're looking for anyone who:

  • Is excited by the prospect of designing impactful software
  • Possesses a high capacity to learn

Questions

the ones we get most

What is the time commitment for being a developer, designer, or part of Studio?

Studio members, developers, and designers are required to attend sprint, our weekly meeting on Saturdays from 1 PM – 4 PM. Outside of that, you're free to work on the projects as much or as little as you want!

Do I need prior experience?

It depends on the program and your class at Rice!

For Studio, we don't require any experience at all — it's built for students with no app development background.

For developer, we look for some exposure to software in the form of previous CS classes, personal projects, or professional experiences, but the level we expect varies based on your year at Rice. For freshmen, we look for any amount of coding experience before reaching college. For sophomores, we look for experience building software projects, whether through a professional experience or just a personal project! And finally, for juniors and seniors, we look for a mix of professional experiences and personal projects.

For designer, you don't need any prior UI/UX experience! We're mainly looking for people with some kind of creative background, whether that be through art, architecture, or anything else.

Can I apply to more than one program?

Yes, and plenty of people do. If you're between two, read the role descriptions above to see which ones interest you the most!

What does the process look like?

For developer, designer, and Studio, the process consists of the written application and an interview. The interview is mostly behavioral with a small technical piece. Don't worry though, no leetcode!! 🙅 We mainly want to understand how you think about software and break down a problem.

What if I don't get in as a developer, designer, or Studio member, or I'm reading this off-cycle?

Fill out this form and we'll keep you posted! We'll be having open events throughout the year, including workshops, recruiting events, and our project showcases, so there will be plenty of ways to engage with the RiceApps community 🙂
